the hug :: chicago children’s portraits

fantastic friends. beautiful children. many many good times.

These are some of our dearest friends from college. I didn’t get to spend nearly enough time with them when I stayed with them in Chicago – I barely saw the kids, mostly in passing. We were able to get in two teeny tiny sessions – one in their back yard, and one in a cute nearby Chicago suburb. To say that the kids were uninterested in taking photos is putting it mildly. It just wasn’t on their agenda. But look… we got some sweet shots.

I love love love this first one. It might just be an all-time favorite.

Parents often worry after a session about not getting anything. But it’s never happened – there’s always moments of calm. Of stillness. Of beauty.

I love you guys. Wish you lived closer. I can’t wait for our week together in August!

Michael Van Krey - This is a testimony of Gwen’s ability to capture shots of children who just won’t cooperate. Gwen is putting this mildly! Our little girl was strangely shy when she is usually a ham in front of the camera, but this shot of “the hug” is something that I’ve tried to capture for 3 years and haven’t managed yet. Gwen got it in one short session early in the morning before her other shoots. We agreed to meet later in the day in a location nearer the airport. After a 45 minute drive, there were skinned knees and stubborn attitudes, such that I really don’t know how you got those single shots of the kids. I certainly didn’t see them.

Thanks Gwen, you are awesome.

Ed Jenkiins - These three shots of Kieran and Zoe are some of the best I’ve seen. I agree that the first one is an all-time favorite for me, too. Thanks for recording these moments. I get to see them so seldom, I have to live vicariously.

Cindy - Gwen, please let me know when you are going to be in California!! I would love to have you photograph my kiddos! These photos are amazing and that hug shot makes me all warm and fuzzy (and they aren’t even my kids, LOL). :)
