sweets. and more sweets. :: minneapolis child photographer

One of our family traditions is to make and decorate a gingerbread house. Some years we fail, and don’t do it at all, despite good intentions. Some years we get so busy we just buy a kit. But this year, Michael spearheaded the project, and started planning it a week ago. He downloaded house plans, looked up recipes, bought candy. Then a couple days ago he baked and assembled the house, complete with stained glass windows. It sat for a few days until we had some time together as a family to decorate it. So last night we hauled out the candy, prepared the frosting (a.k.a.glue) and got busy making memories. Here are some shots from the evening.

Leave me a comment about your favorite holiday tradition, either from when you were a little kid, or now, with your own family. I’ll pick one winner, and that person will receive a $25 gift card to Pacifier, one of my favorite local hip kids clothing and toy stores. (And by the way, if you’re looking for an outfit for a photo session – check them out… eclectic. cool. fun.) If you’re not local, they have a website and will ship nationwide. The winner will be chosen randomly this Saturday the 12th at midnight and announced on my facebook fan page, so check back there to see if you have won!

These are taken with no natural light, no flash. Just our overhead light. I hiked the ISO way, way up. 6400, to be exact.
Embrace the noise.
You know you love it.

Love this texture and color that Bea came up with on the back. Love her embracing Elliott. And love his pouty lip.

The finished product…
Notice the light, emanating from inside? Illuminating those stained glass windows? That would be Michael’s bike light. fa la la la la…

Megan - I love the photos, and noise adds character! :) What creative kids you have.

Let’s see, a favorite holiday tradition…
I would say one of my favorite traditions for our family is getting our Christmas tree on the day after Thanksgiving and then spending the rest of the day decorating it, listening to Christmas music and just being cozy at home. We never make any plans for this day. It is OUR day.

Cindy - I’m so impressed with your house and especially those windows. So from reading your post, sounds like the trick is to assemble the house and let it sit a day and then decorate. We’ve always done our after waiting an hour (anxious kids) the the roof starts to slide. Good tip!
My favorite holiday tradition is our Christmas ornaments. When my then bf (now husband) and I got our first tree together in 1998, we started an ornament collection. I buy ornaments on vacation and things symbolic of our likes of the year (this one is more recent with the kids). My husband always gets the Star Wars ornaments. It’s fun to reminisce when decorating the tree over favorite onrnaments – like the ones we got in Alaska on our honeymoon/cruise or on our first family vacation in Hawaii.

Rebecca - I love the house with all the unique sides. I’m definitely inspired to start this tradition next year when my little ones are a bit older. For now my favorite tradition is decorating gingerbread cookies with my daughter, my mother, and my grandmother. Having four generations in the kitchen is one of the best perks to living close to my family. Here is a glimpse of last years endeavor.

carolyn bowles - Your house turned out beautiful! We have so many family traditions so it’s hard to choose one. Here’s a little list: our polar express train cake we bake and decorate with candies and eat while watching the movie, our little elf that finds a new spot in our house every morning, the advent box that has a special treat for the kids in it every night, our happy birthday jesus cake that we enjoy at our birthday party christmas eve (same cake recipe my mom always made when i grew up), and all the ornaments and decorations we love getting out and displaying. Thanks Gwen for such a festive question!

Melissa - That looks fun! I buy the premade box at Micheal’s and it never looks like the picture :) I think one of my favorite holiday traditions is snuggling with my kids and watching “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Amanda Campbell - Great house- there is literally not one spot not covered in candy- I even see some spots that look like candy on candy. What fun! One of our favorite holiday traditions is the “Christmas Pickle” on the tree. It is a German tradition. We have a pickle ornament and who ever finds it first on Christmas morning gets to open the first gift. So much fun to see the kids look for it! Happy holidays~

Missives From Suburbia - Gorgeous, noise, house, kids and all. What a great tradition.

Sheri Williams - So is the gingerbread house going to be the *sweet* you bring for our Chrismas party? I want to eat it all up!!!

I have two favorite traditions. About ten years ago I found the find of all finds at ARC Value Village: a beautiful hand carved wooden Nativity set from Israel. I love setting it up just a little bit different every year. It sparks lots of questions and pondering. Right now it’s on the fireplace mantel almost out of reach for my wild & crazy 3 year old –”but Baby Jesus is sooo cute mom!”

Tradition #2: Grandma Donna made 25 colorful felt Advent mittens that are filled with trinkets, crafts and goodies that we hang from a wire across the playroom. Every morning they scramble into our bed and ask “is it an odd or even day?” to know who gets to pull the mitten down and take out the booty. Next year will get tricky when their little brother gets thrown into the mix!

Erics candy floss - Candy floss has always been my favorite type of sweet, that kind of culinery masterpiece would last about 2 seconds in this house. Thanks for reminding us of the joys of sweets!
