baby oliver :: minneapolis newborn photographer

I always feel a strong connection with my portrait clients who have home births. Having birthed all of my three kids at home, I know what a beautiful and empowering experience homebirth is, and I love it when I can share that experience with other families. This family just welcomed into their lives sweet baby Oliver, who was born at their beautiful home in Minneapolis. The midwives from Health Foundations attended their birth, and I cannot recommend Amy and her team of midwives highly enough. If you're considering birthing at home or in a birth center, please check out the Health Foundations website.

I came out to their home when baby Oliver was just six days old, and captured some images of their newly expanded family. Big sister Norah was sweet as ever (see how she stole the show at her maternity photo session here!), and baby Oliver was just a dream to photograph. Such a lovely newborn session. I'm quite sure that I have the best job in the whole world. Lucky, lucky me. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to photograph your sweet family!

itty bitty baby boy

Last weekend a very good friend of mine welcomed her third baby into the world, and I visited them in the hospital when he was less than 24 hours old. So tiny... so beautiful... Big brother and sister were incredibly sweet with him. Such a lovely family. Eydie is not only a truly dear friend, but an amazingly talented children's photographer here in the Twin Cities. We've swapped several family sessions since becoming friends... Here is the beautiful session she did with my family, a little over a year ago. I have 6 huge canvases from this session, hanging in my office, giving me such joy every time I see them.

I was so inspired by my visit with them in the hospital - I was reminded again that this is exactly the type of session that I absolutely love. Capturing a family together with their brand new little one is pure bliss to me.

Congratulations Eydie and Jayme on your beautiful new baby boy. He's perfect.

beyond cheese: how to take better photos of your kids: tip 1

I am so excited to have been invited to lead a discussion at the WiseMamas group next month. WiseMamas is a group dedicated to supporting families interested in natural health. They meet on a monthly basis at Health Foundations Family Health and Birth Center in St. Paul to discuss a variety of natural health topics. This is a free event, and is open to the public, so please come and join us! Thursday June 10, 6pm Health Foundations Family Health and Birth Center 968 Grand Avenue Saint Paul, MN, 55105

I'll be talking about how to take better photos of your kids, using whatever camera you have on hand. The event will include an informal presentation on how to take better photos, a question and answer session, and a goodie bag for each registered attendee! Please visit the Wise Mamas facebook event page to RSVP and reserve your goodie bag!

Each week leading up to the discussion, I'll feature a new tip here on my blog about how to take better photos.

This week's tip: Turn off your flash!

Your camera's flash tends to blast your subjects with light, and they will end up looking washed out and pale. And very flat. Turn off your auto flash, and start looking at the quality of the surrounding light (more on that next week!). Your photos should improve dramatically.

Check back here over the next few weeks to learn more tips about how to take better photos of your kids (or grandkids, or friends' kids!) Subscribe to my blog using the link above, so you won't forget to check back!

Can't post without a photo... my beautiful Beatrice. No flash. :)
